Monument Circle has witnessed all different types of gatherings in the more than 150 years that it’s been the geographic and symbolic center our community, and now the start of it’s first ever Super Bowl party last night. The downtown area around and in-between the Circle and Georgia Street was wall-to-wall with thousands of people of every age and description, out to take in the sights, sounds and activities. With all the things to do there, you could come every day next week before the game on Feb. 5th, and experience something different each time. Event Calendar
And then there’s the Georgia Street Pedestrian Mall, refurbishing the Monument on the Circle, expanding the Convention Center, etc. These kinds of things are not inexpensive. They are spending some serious money on improvements and to make things look sharp downtown. I wonder what’s going on? With the flurry of activity, you’d think that they were getting ready for a lot of visitors, media attention and some kind of major event or something here soon?

Of course, the Superbowl inspired a lot of this or at least the timetable for completing it. But won’t it be nice to have things built, updated and looking good just for us afterwards. As a catalyst for positive change, the Superbowl is one of the best things that has ever happened here.

After being removed and completely restored recently she was hoisted to her lofty home again a few weeks ago. But I found her still peeking out through the construction cocoon. I was trying to find a good angle to capture her image inside between the horizontal layers of scaffolding which improves the farther away you are away on either Meridian or Market Streets (with zoom lens) or of course the higher you are from street level. But there just really isn’t a great vantage point right now unless you happen to be inside or work at one of the tall buildings around the circle. The surrounding buildings, trees and construction crane blocks out the view from most points at street level.

So I’ll just have to wait for the package to be unwrapped a little later on this year. It’s been a while since the Circle was free of signs of construction, barricades and equipment. It will be nice to have it back again.

The sun had gone behind one of the many puffy clouds for a few moments and there was indirect lighting only. This view is one of the more famous ones of Indianapolis actually. This same angle gets a number of cameos leading into commercial breaks usually whenever there is a Monday night football game. That view is at night of course with all the building and canal lights lit up with a golden glow. Watch for it next time. Wait, did I say football? Yeah that’s starting again soon.

Being Sunday I thought it was a good time. This building, Christ Church Cathedral, right on the north side of the Circle at Meridian Street downtown has always intrigued me and part of my earliest recollections of downtown Indianapolis along with the Monument itself. While other buildings have come and gone over time on Monument Circle, it is the oldest building still surviving, built in the 1850′s. Amazing example of Gothic architecture and in the National Register of Historic Places.

Although it’s origins and ministry date back to the early 1800′s, it’s still active in the community today. One thing that they are famous for is the Strawberry Festival that they sponsor on the Circle every year.
