Good news, Bad news

The good news…the Pacers are in seventh place in the Eastern Conference, and would be in the playoffs if they started today. The bad news…they’ve only won 14 and lost 20. Which means they aren’t playing that great, but other teams are playing even worse!

I couldn’t believe it when I looked at the numbers and the standings.  The top 4-5 eastern teams are way ahead in the wins/losses category. And western conference teams have won more often when playing eastern teams.

The Colts season is over this year unfortunately, so the Pacers will get a little more of our collective energy and attention sent their way now. I hope it helps. Earlier this year they showed some real promise, but lately they’ve lost quite few games, especially on the road.

Maybe they should practice shooting with a bigger ball to improve their aim? Maybe not as large as this one that hangs in the Pacers gift shop at Conseco Fieldhouse, but something larger than normal. Then at game time, the rim will seem huge when they launch one with the regulation ball.

What recession?

It was hard to find a parking spot in the lot at Keystone at the Crossing. Seriously, just about every spot was taken when I took this photo after driving around for 5 minutes looking for a spot. And this is not a rare occurance on this day only. It’s been like this all through the holidays and at other mall parking lots too around the city.

Maybe counting cars is not as scientific as other stats about the economy. But there are a lot of people out shopping, spending money. Aren’t we are supposed to be in a deep recession? Isn’t the sky supposed to be falling? Parking lots seem to refute that message.

Positive News

Have you noticed lately that the newspapers have been talking about companies offering new jobs and substantial hiring growth expectations locally and nationwide? I even read a story about several large companies that have been accumulating a boatload of cash during the last couple years, have decided it’s now time to start investing in growth. What has gotten into the newspapers? …straying from the official media business model. Only gloom, doom, crime and sensational drama sells. Right? Not honest, balanced reporting.

I’m sure it was painful for them to have to report some positive news because there has been an awful lot of it that has gone unreported the last couple of years. People are hungry for the truth.

Let’s give the newspapers credit though. The TV media has not reported any of this upbeat economic news. It’s still crime, drama and the most negative story they can find that fills the airwaves. Hopefully they’ll see the light too.

Looking Back Briefly

Posted on January 4th, 2011 by Richard. Categories: Food for Thought

For the last few days I’ve been straightening up filing cabinets, and organizing computer folders in preparation for the new year, and so among other things, I’ve had a chance to look through a sampling of the photos I took last year. It’s kind of fun to revisit some recent chapters from last year briefly I guess, but I’m not much into dwelling on the past…or the future for that matter either. Being here and now seems like the most logical place to exist whenever possible. I can’t remember the saying exactly, but it goes something like “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That’s why they call it the present.” Seems to ring true, at least for me.

Choices are powerful. Logically, a person is the sum of the choices they have made in the past. A series of choices. So not much they can do about that. But real power rests in the choices they makes now, each moment. By making the positive choice and taking care of each moment, then the future will just take care of itself.

Some people draw up business plans or revise their life plan about this time of year. A road map of where you are going. There’s value in that I suppose. But to me it’s about having a vision. A dream. If you focus on that with your intent, with tunnel vision if you will, it’s amazing how much if not all of it becomes reality later.

Watching the Flow

The white landscape and ice that we grew so accustomed to the last few weeks is gone with the warm up to near 60′s temps…an unusual but welcome New Years gift for us all. This section of White River, like so many other streams around here, swelled to higher levels than they’ve been for quite a while, fed by the runoff of melting snow and rain.
