I have nothing but complements for Circle Centre, our fabulous shopping mall downtown. It has brought everything together there, connected all the dots..and does so in way we should all be proud of. But the real Circle Center is the classic, the original… Monument Circle. The hub from which all else builds, emanates and grows in all directions. The center of town.
I guess it can be argued that the corner of Washington and Meridian Streets is the true center? It is the apex, the crossing of the main north to south, east to west streets, the basis for our directional and numbering system for all streets. But how could anyone go to that corner crossing….and then go to and drive around Monument Circle, with the Soldiers and Sailors Monument as the axis, and not come away with the certainty of it’s status. There’s a good reason why Indianapolis is nick-named “the Circle City”. It’s a part of all of us…we know it simply as “the Circle”.
